Bangladesh Mission Trip
This August, ORBIS Student Captain Joey Leung and 11 SAC 2011 winners joined our sight saving volunteers in Bangladesh. Tragically one in every 1,300 children in this country is blind. Joey and his young friends began their trip by visiting Moulvibazar Eye Hospital, an ORBIS partner and the only pediatric facility in northern Bangladesh. While there, the group observed eye surgery and witnessed the miraculous moment when a nurse took away someone’s bandages and gave them back their sight.

"Although I have read a lot about ORBIS' work for the blind, I'd never imagined just how incredibly moving being part of that work would be! Although the young cataract patient I met could not communicate with me, we used body language and quickly became firm friends. I was so happy when the surgeons restored his sight", said last year SAC winner, Nicholas Poon.

Acting as ORBIS Student Captain for the first time, Joey Leung is delighted to help SAC winners to learn and wholeheartedly participate in every aspect of their trips. "I am so proud to play my small part in ORBIS' work. Bangladeshis are warm and cheerful and the scenery in their country is truly captivating. Unfortunately, around 40,000 kids here are blind because of poverty and malnutrition. This visit is a wonderful chance for young Hongkongers to help the needy and understand the importance of compassion.

The trip was far more than just a tour to show off our work, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Student Ambassadors to demonstrate their qualities as upstanding citizens. All participants worked during the trip to create a moving videos highlighting their eye-opening experiences.
