At around midnight on Saturday November 10, 2012, over 10,000 happy souls walked through downtown Hong Kong en masse. Undeterred by heavy rain, this year's ORBIS Moonwalkers were on the way to raising over HK$8,500,000 to help restore sight for the world's 285 million visually impaired people.
A return to our early Mongkok to Sai Kung route!"
2012 marked the seventh year our Moonwalkers had taken to the streets. This time around, the route once again started in Mongkok and finished up in Sai Kung. "While our 2012 route was the same as in years one and two, the number of participants has increased tremendously! I've been growing older with the walk and now have to take rest for a few days after I've finished which I never had to do before!", said diehard Moonwalkers fan, Jenny.
Heavy rains fail to dampen the loving glow
Though the walk's route was a repeat, the unexpectedly heavy rain was a first and many participants had no waterproof gear. With everyone needing to pay extra-special attention to road safety after the skies opened, the subsequent night proved especially challenging. Happily, such setbacks and the cold weather only made everyone's passion for the blind burn more brightly! "If anything, the downpour made us all feel even more joyful!" said Moonwalker, Vincent.
Moonwalkers iPhone app collects 2012's hottest footprints
An ORBIS Moonwalkers iPhone app with e-certificate functions and five specially-designed camera filters that enabled participants to capture their favorite moments of the night was another first. Walkers simply collected a 'virtual' stamp at each checkpoint and exchanged it for an e-certificate when reaching journey's end. Most of those involved couldn't wait to share their certificates with their friends via facebook!
