ORBIS has always regarded its supporters as being every bit as important as the multinational teams of volunteer doctors, nurses, pilots and technicians who carry out its sight-saving initiatives
. After all, without the generosity of you and others like you, these missions would simply never take place.
ORBIS medical volunteers
Medical volunteers are the backbone of ORBIS programmes. Ophthalmic specialists from all over the world give their time and energy to help eliminate avoidable blindness and restore sight. These volunteers, known as volunteer faculty, include ophthalmologists, orthoptists, biomedical engineers, anaesthetists and ophthalmic nurses.
More than 400 medical professionals are part of ORBIS's global volunteer faculty. They come from countries as diverse as Argentina, Israel, Great Britain, Australia, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, India and the United States.
Volunteer faculty share their expertise in a wide variety of ophthalmic specialties. Expertise is passed on to colleagues from the developing world by way of consultations, surgical demonstrations, wet lab sessions, lectures and workshops through either a Flying Eye Hospital visit or a hospital-based programme.
Volunteer placements last one to three weeks and can be either an individual or a team placement. Among the challenges is working in the limited space aboard the Flying Eye Hospital or in local settings using existing equipment.
ORBIS prides itself on the fact that some of the world's most respected ophthalmologists participate as volunteer faculty. Medical volunteers require four years' of work experience and must have references from two Flying Eye Hospital volunteers or staff. Fluency in more than one language is an advantage. If you would like to find out more about becoming an ORBIS volunteer faculty member, please contact us.
