Legacy Giving

Individuals who demonstrate their deep commitment to the fight against global blindness by including ORBIS in their will, trusts or life insurance policies become a member of our honorary programme called the Visionary Club.

By joining the Visionary Club, you not only develop a deeper understanding of ORBIS's work, you also become part of a chain reaction that will transform the lives of those who are needlessly blind. Donors who notify ORBIS of their intention to make a legacy donation of any size automatically become part of the Visionary Club.

Benefits

• A unique Visionary Club plaque for your home or office
• Regular updates on ORBIS's medical and training programmes
• Recognition in our newsletters and website (optional)
• Invitations to special activities, such as receptions at which ORBIS volunteer doctors or staff share their sight-saving experiences and unforgettable stories, and field visits to witness first hand ORBIS's sight-saving work

All information you provide will be held in the strictest confidence, and you can request that your membership in the Visionary Club remain confidential. You are free to change your mind about your legacy at any time. To learn about ORBIS's planned giving programme, please call Elaine Lau at (852) 2508 7003 or send an e-mail to her at elaine.lau@orbis.org

How to leave a legacy

Writing a will is never easy and should only be done after consulting your family solicitor. Please find below some examples of the ways in which you can remember ORBIS in your will.

  • General bequest. General bequests describe exactly what you want to leave and to whom, while giving your executors the flexibility to decide from which source the funds are to be paid. Here is some sample wording:

"I give the sum of HK$______, free of all taxes and duties, to Project Orbis International, Inc of Shops 54-56A, 69 at G/F & Rooms 9-14 at 1/F Victoria Centre, 15 Watson Road, North Point, Hong Kong for its general charitable purposes. I direct that the official receipt from the said charity shall be sufficient discharge to my executors and that the said gift shall be paid exclusively from my Hong Kong situated estate."

  • Specific bequest. Specific bequests are similar to general bequests but also specify from which source the funds are to be paid. For example, you may wish to leave ORBIS a percentage of your life insurance policy. Here is some sample wording:

"I give the sum of HK$_______, free of all taxes and duties, to Project Orbis International, Inc of Shops 54-56A, 69 at G/F & Rooms 9-14 at 1/F Victoria Centre, 15 Watson Road, North Point, Hong Kong for its general charitable purposes to be paid from my life insurance policy (Ref No. _______________). I direct that the official receipt from the said charity shall be sufficient discharge to my executors."

  • Residuary bequest. Residuary bequests are honoured after all other bequests to families have been made and all expenses and taxes have been paid from your estate.  Here is some sample wording:

"I give ___ percent of the residue of my estate absolutely to Project Orbis International, Inc of Shops 54-56A, 69 at G/F & Rooms 9-14 at 1/F Victoria Centre, 15 Watson Road, North Point, Hong Kong for its general charitable purposes. I direct that the official receipt from the said charity shall be sufficient discharge to my executors."

  • Contingent Bequest. Contingent bequests are only made if certain conditions are met. For example, if your principle beneficiary does not survive you, you may wish to indicate your next choice through a contingency designation. Here is some sample wording:

"I give all the rest residue and remainder of my estate to ___________, if he or she survives me. If not, I give HK$_________, free of all taxes and duties, to Project Orbis International, Inc of Shops 54-56A, 69 at G/F & Rooms 9-14 at 1/F Victoria Centre, 15 Watson Road, North Point, Hong Kong for its general charitable purposes and I give the remainder of my estate to __________. I direct that the official receipt from the said charity shall be sufficient discharge to my executors."

The above wordings are provided for your guidance only. For more detailed advice on any matter related to your will, always seek the advice of your family solicitor.
