Xiu-hua went blind following improper treatment by village doctor. |
An accident-prone family falls victim to an untrained "doctor"
38-year-old Zhang Qing-lian and her 12-year-old daughter, Shi Xiu-hua both went blind following minor accidents on their farm. When Shi lost her sight in 2003, her village “doctor” prescribed eye drops for her "minor" damage!
In many rural villages in China, properly trained medical professionals who could have stopped tragedies like the Zhangs are virtually unknown. Instead, people rely on "village doctors" who lack formal training and diagnose by "observation".
"I can see you now! I can see you now!"
An ORBIS-trained doctor certainly transformed the life of 80-year-old Lamu Zhuoma from Sichuan’s mountainous Derong village! Lamu has worked hard to support her loved ones all her life. Just as she was looking forward to seeing her grandkids grow, cataracts began steadily stealing her sight and mobility. Feeling increasingly like a burden to her loved ones, Lamu’s only hope was to see her grandchildren.
Villagers like Lamu must journey many miles to a big city to obtain medical assistance. When ORBIS trainee, Dr. Zhuang Yong, heard Lamu had never seen her grandchildren, he visited Derong and performed sight restoring cataract removal surgery. As her bandages were removed, Lamu shouted, "I can see you now! I can see you now! Now I can see my family, I can rest in peace even if I die tomorrow!"

"I was so excited when I took off Lamu's bandages!", said Dr.Zhuang. |

"I'm determined to use my ORBIS training to help as many people as I can!"
"Restoring Lamu’s sight is a wonderful example of how ORBIS training is transforming lives", said Dr. Zhuang, Chief Ophthalmologist of Diqing Shangri-la People’s Hospital. For the last six years, ORBIS and Dr. Zhuang have helped jointly establish an Integrated Eye Disease Prevention Center that now performs regular eye-screenings and educational initiatives in nearby villages.
